tiny jewelry

for the tiny gallery i began by making small versions of some of the things i have made already like metal cones, borderlines structures, and graffiti badges. to round out the group i made a few pieces with tiny details, mainly in the form of knots. the arrangement of the objects was just as important as the pieces themselves. to create the arrangement i used a piece of foam core and tacks. i worked quickly and stuck with gut feelings about where each piece should go. i only made a few changes as i went along. the final arrangement was nailed directly on the door. i posted a series of images on flickr that shows the arrangement from 1 to 2 to 3 and so on.

guest star #64...kate bajic

today's guest star is kate bajic from the UK. her brooches caught my eye when i first found her website--the simplicity of each piece, the repetitive elements, the asymmetrical design and patterns, and the subtle details in the form of hammer marks, piercing, and layering make for some really lovely work. i especially like the matte finish on the gold brooch pictured above - that soft yellow color is just gorgeous.

tiny gallery!

the tiny gallery opened its doors yesterday for the the first time. the event was really fun and i am so happy i was a part of it. the gallery is totally portable and super easy to install - it's made of 6 salvaged doors that are hinged together. the 6 participating artists who each got a door to display their work made incredible pieces and everything looked wonderful together. we had a great time installing the show in the morning, too - we each took our turn because there really wasn't room inside for more than one person to install at a time. we helped each other and the camaraderie was heartwarming. i will post lots of pics on flickr of the series i made just for the show as well as images of all the participants setting up and their individual work. i'll blog about my own work next week.

and me...
...more later.

back to white and now with bows

bow brooch

i recently finished a few new spray painted pieces. i revisited white for these and added more layers of paint than i usually do because i wanted the surface to be even stronger and have more depth. i also worked with similar forms that i have worked with before just to try them all again. what i am most excited about, though, is my new shape - the bow - created as another way to add dimension to work that tends to be pretty flat. the bow feels very feminine and nostalgic to me.
